MSU-IIT Integrated Developmental School (IDS) team hailed as champion in the 2014 STEAG State Power Inc. Energy Quiz held on December 5, 2014 at Centrio Mall, Cagayan de Oro City. According to Sunstar Philippines, “the annual event has become one of the much awaited campus competitions among high schools in Northern Mindanao, as it provides opportunities among students to demonstrate and prove their competence and knowledge in the fields of science and energy”
On its tenth year, STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) showed a video of the past years winners which included the following schools:
Lumbia National High School (2005)
Xavier University (2006)
Bayanga National High School (2007)
Xavier University (2008)
St. Mary School (2009)
Rosevale School (2010)
Regional Science High School (2011)
MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology IDS (2012)
MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology IDS (2013)
The IDS is the first school to win the championship for three consecutive years (or what they call a three-peat) since the contest began in 2005.
Over the years, SPI has been collaborating with Department of Education Region 10 to organize the annual quiz show, which aims to “promote academic excellence among the youth as well as develop among them a special interest in the science of energy via a friendly contest and intellectual competition.” The quiz show includes facts, laws and current events pertaining to electricity, energy and other subjects relating to chemistry and physics.
About 30 teams from various private and public high schools in Region 10 participated in this year’s STEAG quiz show.
It was a very thrilling competition today. In a time when our contestants lagged behind other teams in the first two rounds, they made sure that there’s no room for mistakes in the final round. They got a perfect score on the last round and emerged as victors in the end. It was a nerve-racking experience. I am having second thoughts on whether I will watch the competition next year or not. I can’t handle the stress of anticipating for the answers and cheering for the students all at the same time.
The winning team from IDS is composed of senior high school students: Brandon Kristoff Apat, Lance Cedrick Infante, and Vhebs Terez Buhion with coach-adviser Ms. Ivy Claire V. Mordeno and assistant coach Ms. Alma Gloria Silva.
When the coach-adviser Ms. Mordeno was asked by the press people on how she prepared the students for the competition, she said that most of the questions relating to chemistry and physics were already discussed in the classroom. The students need not study the topics for the sake of the competition because the topics are already integrated in the curriculum. The role of the coach is just to review the topics.
The other winners were: Liceo de Cagayan University, and Angelicum Learning Center won second and third places respectively in the said event.
