On June 27, 2015, I was granted the license to become an organizer for TEDxMSUIIT. Some questions were asked by the students, teachers and alumni when I announced the upcoming TEDx event to a community page of the University on Facebook.
In this post, I have compiled 10 things that you need to know about TEDxMSUIIT.
1. The organizing team
Just like all other TEDx events, it all starts with an idea. In the MSU-IIT faculty union page, I posted: In our desire to become a world-class institution, I think it is the right time to conduct our very own TEDx event this 2015. I am looking for 7 MSU-IIT faculty members who would commit to the organizing and planning of this event. Then we are good to go. If you are interested, please email me.
There wasn’t a huge response from the community but there were those who were willing to work with me for the project. In the book Good To Great, Jim Sheppard abides with the principle FIRST WHO, THEN WHAT. This principle states that we get the right people first and then set the right strategy. Organizing a TEDx event will be a voluntary and non-profitable journey, so it was good to establish that with the working committee from the start.
The TEDxMSUIIT organizing team, composed of faculty members from the College of Arts and Social Science, College of Business and Accountancy, College of Nursing and School of Computer Studies, had its first meeting on March 5, 2015. To have a clear understanding of what a TEDx event is, we discussed the TEDx hosting pack and the challenges ahead of us.
2. University event
A TEDx event is described as “a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations)”. TEDxMSUIIT is considered as a University event.
3. Only 100 participants
As part of the TEDx rules and regulations, only 100 participants are allowed to attend the event. In the months to come, we will update you on how to avail a seat.
4. TEDx event may or may not charge for ticket fees
If TEDxMSUIIT will charge for an admission fee, the proposed ticket price is subject to the approval of TED.
5. Not the first in Mindanao
TEDxMSUIIT is not the first in Mindanao. Ateneo de Davao University had their TEDxADDU in 2012 while Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan) had their TEDxXU early this year.
6. The venue, date and time
As approved by TED, the tentative venue will be at the MSU-IIT Mini Theater on November 27, 2015 at 5:30 to 8:30 PM.
7. Number of speakers
We will reveal the identity of the speakers soon. What I can share for now is that we will have 5 to 6 speakers for the event.
8. The Head Organizer
Applying for a TEDx license was not an easy task. You have to convince the TEDx licensing team that you have the necessary skills to be recognized as an organizer. In the application process, you will describe yourself based on your job description, your interests and even your favorite TED videos. And then somewhere in the application phase later, they will ask you another question: “What do we need to know about you that we didn’t ask?” When I saw the question, I was like- “I already shared EVERYTHING about myself:” Good thing I continued answering and finally got approved for the role.
As a head organizer, my license will expire on June 2016. Each organizer is granted to organize one TEDx event in 12 months. The organizer and the organizing team members are not allowed to become speakers for the event.
9. Diversity of Ideas
During the application process, the TEDx team will tell you over and over again that TED is all about ideas and not speakers. We had to present ideas which are diverse and follow the rules set by TED. For TEDxMSUIIT, the ideas vary from one interest to another.
10. The theme
Although a theme is not required for a TEDx event, we thought of one for TEDxMSUIIT. For this TEDx talk, the focus will be on Mindanao being described as the LAND OF PROMISE since the 1990s. The title of the event is In The Land of Promise and talks will be entitled “The Promise of _________.”
So there you have it, I hope I have answered some of your questions. please feel free to leave a comment if I missed some things that you need to know about TEDxMSUIIT.
